Ihastuin The Birth Posteriin heti ensinäkemältä.
"I never saw this kind of birth posters, what was your inspiration? How did you come up with the idea? Has it something to do with personalization of the birth posters?
My husband – Gustav have had the idea for many years, to do something with the length of a newborn baby on a poster. Previously he was an art director on an advertising agency here in Stockholm and have always been full of ideas. The inspiration of doing something about it came from the fact that I had begun a career in finance and didn't like it. One night I had some sort of crisis of what to do with my life and Gustav told me to try out that baby-idea he had. Since I've always liked to illustrate, I immediately started to create a bunch of babies, after approx. two months I had come up with one we liked (Sketch #1) and after that we started up an online store and opened up in September 2013 here in Sweden. After a couple of months online it exploded and all mama blogs in Sweden wrote about us without us doing almost any advertising at all. After that we realized that we were on to something big. A while later we opened up our international online store – The Birth Poster (www.thebirthposter.com) and released three more illustrations.
You are the one who actually draws the posters. Have you been drawing your whole life? What did you do for a living before you had The Birth Poster?
Four years ago I actually graduated with a master in economics and business and started a job at a big finance company here in Stockholm. But I realized after a couple of months that this was not for me. I was starting to be more and more interested in doing something more creative, especially since Gustav had done that for a while and inspired me. In January both Gustav and I quit our jobs to create our own creative studio called – Schmeck Studios. At the same time I started to study illustration at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm to develop my skills and prepare for future illustration projects we might have.
Did you always know you wanted to start your own company?
I never really thought about it that much. But now when I think about it, everyone in my family has their own business so perhaps it wasn't that far away. I think the combination of me and Gustav made it happened, we really complement each other.
When you had the idea of the birth posters.. How did you start your company?
Since I had background in economics/business and Gustav had years of experience from building and designing websites we were the perfect combo to start a online store. I took about six months before everything was set since we had our full time jobs and had to do The Birth Poster on nights and weekends.
You’ve started this company as a ‘couple’. Does this mean Gustav is your boyfriend/partner? How is this working out for your relationship?
We have been a couple for four and a half years and live together here in Stockholm. Actually we just got married four months ago in Sicily and are now expecting our first baby boy :D From the beginning we were a bit nervous of how it would be to work with each other full time and see each other all the time, but it has actually worked out really well. We have divided many of the responsibilities so that we don't have to take all decisions together all the time. The Birth Poster is our little baby and we just love to work with it!
What makes your brand and product unique?
We were the first in the world with the idea to have a baby illustration in scale 1:1 on a poster. Another thing that makes us unique is that we from the start wanted to go away from all the cuteness that you often see on other online stores with baby products. We wanted to bring in more design and minimalism to our brand instead of doing like everyone else – make every product pink or baby blue. We wanted our posters to be hanged in the living room as well as in children's room.
Where do you see your brand in five years?
Our goal and vision is to continue to develop The Birth Poster and reach out to new parts of the world. In a couple of months we will also launch a new online store with another idea we have. It's gonna be really exciting to see how people will respond to it. "
